PROTECTED AREAS: TEMPLES OF BIODIVERSITY AND ANCESTRAL HOME OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES<\/h1>\n

Protected areas are considered worldwide to be one of the most effective instruments for biodiversity conservation. They are spaces created primarily to conserve extraordinary biodiversity values in perpetuity, thus protecting ecosystems, landscapes, ecosystem functions, and unique, endemic, and\/or threatened species of flora and fauna. They must be managed with absolute competence and professionalism, considering the relevance of conservation science as the primary guide, but incorporating a transdisciplinary approach as an element that enriches management.<\/p>\n

All protected areas with intact ecosystems contribute to the recharge and maintenance of aquifers, in some cases acting as gigantic underground lakes. In this way, they all provide good quality water for both nature and local communities and their regions. Protected areas with extensive expanses of tropical rainforest or sub-humid forest, in particular, contribute to climate regulation by keeping the air humid through soil moisture and tree transpiration. They also contribute to the regular provision of local and regional rainfall by emitting "aromas," that is, volatile organic compounds (terpenes) which, when oxidized in the atmosphere, become condensation nuclei for raindrops, generating the typical abundant local rainfall.<\/p>\n

Consequently, their well-preserved forests create humid air currents that act as veritable "aerial rivers," carrying rain. Protected areas also serve as a buffer against destructive atmospheric events, such as gales or hurricanes, by attenuating the concentration of wind energy. All protected areas, to a greater or lesser degree, control river flows and headwaters, thus contributing to the mitigation and control of floods and sediment loads in rivers. The dense root systems stabilize the soil on steep slopes and reduce the likelihood of landslides.<\/p>\n

Many of these protected areas are home to Indigenous communities and safeguard ancestral cultural values, both tangible and intangible, including sacred sites, which may also be significant archaeological heritage. Protected areas provide services and foster a sense of identity and territorial and regional belonging for Indigenous and rural communities, as well as the broader regional population.<\/p>\n

In general, protected areas, depending on their categories, zones, and management rules, offer important resources that form the basis of subsistence and food security for local communities. As ancestral homelands of traditional Indigenous and\/or peasant cultures, they conserve native agrobiodiversity resources (varieties of potatoes, cassava, peanuts, beans, chili peppers, squash) that are fundamental to local and regional food security and part of the cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

Likewise, based on the survival of traditional indigenous and peasant knowledge systems, they can support alternative silvicultural and agroecological production models with low environmental impact. All of them offer a high number of medicinal plant species used locally and regionally. Protected areas also provide natural pest control for surrounding regions and even function as natural barriers to reduce the spread of regional pests. All of them offer highly specialized pollinator services.<\/p>\n

All of them offer extraordinary, even superlative, natural scenic and landscape values, providing exceptional opportunities for ecotourism activities and contributing to the well-being of local and regional populations. Some protect extraordinary paleontological sites.<\/p>\n

Protected areas provide an existence value; the mere fact of knowing that protected areas exist should generate a feeling of joy and well-being.<\/p>\n

September 4th is commemorated as Protected Areas Day; however, it is very important to highlight that, despite their immense current value and value for future generations, and their full recognition in the Political Constitution of the State, they face a regrettable lack of support from the State and society, as well as various threats from highly exploitative extractive processes, the construction of high-impact infrastructure, megaprojects, and the uncontrolled advance of agricultural frontiers.<\/p>\n
