JUSTICE FOR WILDLIFE PROMOTES "OPERATION JAGUAR BOLIVIA"«
The «Specialized Course in Environmental Delights and Against Life» The "Silvester in Bolivia" event was held within the framework of the international project "Operation Jaguar," promoted in Bolivia by the SAVIA Association and IUCN NL, and was aimed at judges and prosecutors of the state. The virtual event was supported by the State Prosecutor's School and the State Judges' School, as well as the Directorate of the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office, and the Ministry of Environment and Water.
The event brought together more than 100 participants from institutions responsible for investigating, sustaining, and resolving cases related to crime. The event focused on the environment and wildlife in various departments of Bolivia, where participants strengthened and updated their knowledge through presentations by experts with extensive experience in the field. The event emphasized the importance of protecting wildlife species, especially those at high risk of extinction, such as the jaguar. As a designated Natural Heritage of the State (CPE), the jaguar is protected by legislation that safeguards it from those who commit crimes against it.
The course was aimed at judges and prosecutors specializing in environmental matters, judges and prosecutors of country regions identified as points 𝗰𝗿í𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗼𝘀 𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗿áThe event was attended by members of the police force, primarily from Jaguar, and from border regions, with the aim of helping to neutralize this type of crime. Personnel from POFOMA, the police unit specializing in environmental issues, also participated. The objective was to strengthen the knowledge, skills, and activities of the 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀, the practice of environmental criminal law, prosecution of environmental crime, mainly the trafficking of Jaguars and their parts (fangs, skins, bones and fat).
The training provided guidelines for prosecutors to improve the efficiency of their investigations and identify trafficking networks operating in the country. For judges, the course offered key guidelines for handling jaguar trafficking cases, enabling them to more effectively substantiate and resolve cases. It also included the development and resolution of a case study to encourage expert analysis in addressing wildlife crimes.
We are confident that the information and experience provided to the officials who participated in the course will contribute to the protection and conservation of Bolivia's Natural Heritage through in-depth research and an efficient and committed Justice system, setting precedents against those who commit crimes against wildlife, with the aim of safeguarding the right of every person to enjoy a healthy, protected and balanced environment.
