THE JAGUAR ROARS IN THE CHIQUITANIA
The Operation Jaguar Bolivia Project, present in San Ignacio de Velasco in collaboration with the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park (PNNKM), is promoting the conservation of representative species within the Protected Area, with a focus on the jaguar as the key wild animal for maintaining ecosystem balance. For three days, young people and adults learned about the jaguar's role and importance in these ecosystems, sharing their experiences and expressing their concern about the species' vulnerable status.
On this occasion, project technicians and park rangers led activities with over 200 children on the topic, including coloring, word searches, talks, mask-making, and contests. The children demonstrated great creativity, which inspired those present. The ECCOS Project also participated in the event, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen joint awareness campaigns with the SAVIA Association. These campaigns aim to cultivate a better environment for protected areas and the species that inhabit them, ensuring a future for generations to come.
The activity took place in the Main Square on July 31st in celebration of the 273rd Anniversary of this Mission Municipality located in the Chiquitano ecoregion, specifically in the area of influence of the PNNKM, a Protected Area that has an extension of 1,523,446 hectares that conserve a rich transitional vegetation between the Southern Amazon and the Chiquitano Cerrado.
It is worth noting that this Protected Area has extraordinary ecological value and is a unique natural destination in the Rondonian Amazon, especially since the Brazilian side has experienced decades of modification and destruction of these ecosystems. Due to its importance, the PNNKM was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The Project is implemented by the Association for the Conservation and Research of Biodiversity and Sustainable Development – SAVIA, jointly with the Dutch Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN-NL).
